?Influenzaviruscharacterisation,SummaryEurope,February201611Mar2016Fromweek40/2015,thestartofweeklyreportingoninfluenzaactivityintheWHOEuropeanRegion,toweek07/2016over70000influenzadetectionsacrosstheRegionhavebeenreported.InfluenzatypeAvirusesareprevailingovertypeBbut,unlikethesituationinthe2014–15season,A(H1N1)pdm09virusesareprevailingoverA(H3N2),andtheproportionofB/Victoria-lineagedetectionshasrisensubstantially,representing~92%ofthoseascribedtoaBviruslineage.Todate,23EU/EEAcountrieshaveshared424influenza-positivespecimenswiththeFrancisCrickInstitute,London,fordetailedcharacterisation:16additionalcountriesand330specimenssincetheDecember2015report.Sincethelatterreport,230viruseshavebeencharacterisedantigenicallyandgeneticanalysesareongoing.The166A(H1N1)pdm09virusescharacterisedantigenicallyweresimilartothevaccinevirusA/California/7/2009.Worldwidenewgeneticsub-clustersofviruseswithinthe6Bcladehaveemerged,withtwobeingdesignatedassubclades:6B.1definedbyHA1aminoacidsubstitutionsS162NandI216Tand6B.2definedbyHA1aminoacidsubstitutionsV152TandV173I.Ofthe123virusescharacterisedgenetically,18(14%)wereclade6B,98(80%)weresubclade6B.1andseven(6%)weresubclade6B.2.The26A(H3N2)testvirusescharacterisedbyhaemagglutinationinhibition(HI)assaywerepoorlyrecognisedbyreferenceantiserumraisedagainstegg-propagatedA/Switzerland/9715293/2013,thevaccinevirusrecommendedforuseinthe2015–2016northernhemisphereinfluenzaseason,despiteover75%ofthetestvirusesfallinginthesamegeneticsubclade(3C.3a)asthevaccinevirus.Thetestviruseswererecognisedsomewhatbetterbyantiseraraisedagainstegg-propagatedA/HongKong/4801/2014,thevirusrecommendedforusein2016southernhemisphereand2016–2017northernhemisphereinfluenzavaccines.Of40A(H3N2)virusescharacterisedgenetically:one(2%)wasclade3C.3,23(58%)weresubclade3C.2aand16(40%)weresubclade3C.3a.The33B/Victoria-lineageviruseswereantigenicallysimilartoB/Brisbane/60/2008andfellingeneticclade1Aasdorecentlycollectedvirusesworldwide.ThefiveB/Yamagatavirusescharacterisedfellingeneticclade3andreactedwellwithpost-infectionferretantiserumraisedagainstegg-propagatedB/Phuket/3073/2013,therecommendedvaccinevirusforthenorthernhemisphere2015–16influenzaseasonandforuseinquadrivalentvaccinesinthe2016southernhemisphereand2016–17northernhemisphereinfluenzaseasons.-Seemoreat:http://ecdc.europa.eu/en/publications/_layouts/forms/Publication_DispForm.aspx?List=4f55ad51-4aed-4d32-b960-af70113dbb90&ID=1447#sthash.BEgxu8S0.dpuf
