Amanita polypyramis, or the “Plateful of Pyramids Lepidella”, is an ectomycorrhizal fungus found in both North and Central America. The cap of the mushroom is covered with many small protrusions shaped as pyramids, and mushrooms are often very large, with caps ranging from 70 to 180 mm. Mushrooms are also very smelly, with an odor described as “decaying protein”. The sequenced strain was collected from a mixed oak and pine forest of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in October 2007.
