This data file is a binary MATLAB MAT-file (version 7.3) format encoding described in https://uk.mathworks.com/help/matlab/import_export/mat-file-versions.html. The file is formatted using Hierarchical Data Format version 5 (HDF5). The file contains two MATLAB structure (struct) variables called C1 and C3. C1 contains the values for Cluster-1 spacecraft and C3 contains the values for Cluster-3. The contents of C1 and C3 are described in Table 1 below. Further details are provided in the following paper: Rogers, N. C., Wild, J. A., & Grocott, A. (2026). Quantifying Uncertainty in OMNI Solar Wind Measurements Projected from L1 to the Earth’s Bow Shock, Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics. Variable Data type (size) Description datetimes datetime (N x 1) Dates and times (UT) at the start of each minute. Re double (1 x 1) Earth radius (km) assumed in calculations. cis_mode_arr double (N x 2) CIS operating mode(s) used during each minute of datetimes. GOODBSI .firstIPMdates datetime (N x 1) Times of first entry of spacecraft into solar wind. GOODBSI .goodBSi double (N x 1) Manually-assigned confidence levels for each contiguous (trans-apogee) period in the solar wind (between GOODBSI.firstIPMdates and GOODBSI.lastIPMdates): 0 = low confidence (assessed from IMF (B) components), 1 = high confidence (from B only on Cluster-1; from B and V on Cluster-3) 0.5 = high confidence B, but low confidence V. (The 0.5 value was assigned for Cluster-3 data only). GOODBSI .manualCheckedIPMi logical (N x 1) True for datetimes when both V and B are assigned high confidence (of presence in the solar wind). False otherwise. (Relates to (N x 1) datetimes) GOODBSI .manualCheckedIPMi _B_good_V_goodorbad logical (N x 1) True for datetimes when B is assigned high confidence (of presence in the solar wind) but V indicates low confidence. False otherwise. BACKOFF .Re double (1 x 5) Selected backoff distances (units of Earth radii (Re) measured radially beyond the bow shock crossing point). BACKOFF .i logical (N x 5) True for datetimes when spacecraft is >= BACKOFF.Re Earth radii beyond the bow shock crossing). (Based on mean spacecraft location for each minute in datetimes.) qlt3 logical (N x 1) True for datetimes when CIS/HIA quality indices were < 3. FGM_caveat_badi logical (N x 1) True for datetimes when the FGM instrument was subject to caveats. CIS_HIA_caveat_badi logical, (N x 1) True for datetimes when the CIS/HIA instrument was subject to caveats. Table 1: Variables in the MATLAB structs C1 and C3. C1 contains Cluster-1 values; C3 contains Cluster-3 values. N = the number of minutes of data = 12096000.
