Despite one of the earliest oral bacteria identified, little is known about the specific role of Selenomonas sputigena within the oral environment. The type strain, S. sputigena ATCC 35185, is the only strain to date of the species to be sequenced. A second Selenomonas strain (ATCC 33150), which exhibits notably different physiological characteristics, has been sequenced to enhance understanding of the genus. This additional complete genome aids efforts to understand an organism linked toperiodontal disease progression in the complex oral microbe community. As thereare no genetic manipulation tools developed for S. sputigena, the comparative analysis of the two genomes will allow for more directed tool development.
