This dataset is a subset of the data supporting the analysis presented in the paper *Advances in Climate Change Research* (Ran et al., 2022). It includes the current (2000–2016) spatial extents of permafrost, seasonally frozen ground and non-frozen ground across the Third Pole region (encompassing the Tibetan Plateau, Pamir Plateau and Tianshan Mountains), decadal changes in the mean annual ground temperature of permafrost and active layer thickness since the 1960s, as well as the Third Pole region boundary data used in this paper.
