The study goals were to measure differential gene expression in the spleen and skin of wild wood frogs throughout the cold season in temperate North America. Winters are warming at an alarming rate, which may leave ectothermic hosts at a disadvantage relative to their parasites when temperatures are warmer than normal. We investigated how baseline gene expression in two important immune tissues varied throughout the cold season with a particular focus on how immune functions were transcribed between emergence from hibernation and the four weeks following.
