Field Documentation of Mirror Carp (Cyprinus carpio) in a Rural Polyculture Pond, Bangladesh

This research note provides a field-based account of a deceased juvenile Mirror Carp (Cyprinus carpio var. specularis) observed in a rural polyculture pond in Bangladesh. The Mirror Carp, a scale-reduced variety of the Common Carp, holds significant value in freshwater aquaculture but faces multiple threats in unmanaged environments. This observation was recorded using a mobile device and georeferenced with GPS, with data submitted to global biodiversity platforms such as iNaturalist and GBIF. Environmental context included shallow water with organic debris and agricultural runoff. The aim of this report is to link localized citizen science observations to broader conservation narratives and ecological assessments. This work highlights the role of community-led biodiversity monitoring in developing countries and underlines how grassroots documentation can offer crucial data on aquatic species health and habitat status. By engaging in scientifically sound and publicly accessible platforms, citizen scientists like the author contribute valuable insights to global biodiversity data repositories.
