The lethal Mendelian disease Foal Immunodeficiency Syndrome (FIS), which manifests as B-lymphocyte immunodeficiency and progressive anaemia (Scholes et al. 1998), is a substantial threat to Fell and Dales ponies. We have mapped and sequenced the underlying locus in five individuals.
