These are printed log books issued to those foreign-going or home trade ships arriving in Newcastle. Entries are arranged under the following headings: name of ship and official number, port of registry, registered tonnage, name of master, port at which and date when voyage terminated, names and character of crew, ship's draught of water recorded at each port of call, marriages, births and deaths, and employment of Lascars and Asiatic seamen. These facts are followed by records of unusual occurrences signed by the master. Many of the logs are preceded by printed information for shipmasters in the form of official notices and summaries of law relating to the following matters: official logs, discipline, regulations for preventing collisions at sea, duties of master in cases of collision, neglect to exhibit lights, signals of distress, signals for pilots, signals in lighthouse service, caution when approaching British ports, rocket apparatus for saving life (with diagrams), wind scale, incorrect charts, notices to mariners, coal cargoes, deck loads, accommodation for seamen, medicines, antiscorbutics, cholera, plague, infected ships, seamen's money orders and banks, advances and allotment notes, payment of wages, discharge of seamen abroad, payments in foreign money, ships' boats and life-saving appliances.
