In wetlands, waterlogged organic soils store a significant portion of the global soil carbon (C). Low decomposition rates are the prerequisite for C sequestration in these ecosystems. In a mesocosm experiment, the influence of nitrate supplementation on litter decomposition and dissolved organic carbon conversion was investigated. In this context, the bacterial community involved in the N cycle was investigated. Selected bacterial strains were characterised in detail physiologically and phylogenomically.
