Database of FTIR spectra peak assignment for major chemical functional groups

Functional groups on materials
and cell surface play important roles in mediating a variety of interactions
between different materials as well as between cells and materials. Thus,
characterization of type and relative abundance of different chemical
functional groups on material and cell surface play important roles in helping
us formulate hypothesis governing material-cell interactions, as well as
understanding fundamental biomaterial-cell interactions. To this end, Fourier
transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is the workhorse instrumented method for
characterizing material and cell surface for presence of a broad range of
chemical functional groups and their relative abundance. This works reports a
small collated database of the wavenumber specific to each type of functional
group, which would help facilitate interpretation of FTIR spectrum, as well as
semi-quantitative analysis of relative abundance of chemical functional groups.
