VPRS 5698 Criminal Court Minute Book

From 1841 to 1852 all Victorian Supreme Court cases were handled by the New South Wales Supreme Court, Port Phillip District under the Imperial Act 5 Vict No 9. It provided that the resident judge of the Port Phillip District should have exclusive jurisdiction to deal with civil and criminal cases.This series consists of the Minute Book recording proceedings in the criminal jurisdiction of the Court. Details given are the date, the presiding judge, lists of jurors empanelled, the cases heard with the name of the defendant, the charge and the verdict or the sentence given for sessions where sentencing was being carried out. Other information is the imposition of fines for non-attendance for jury duty.
