Escherichia coli OP50. E. coli OP50 is used as the food source for almost all laboratory cultures of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Almost all isolates of this strain currently in use can be traced back to the strain used by Sydney Brenner in the early C. elegans work, and they therefore represent a global resource for looking at local bacterial evolution.
