The sequencing data provided belongs to a study which investigated the population structure and genetic diversity of koalas, using 37 historic and 25 modern genomes sampled across their geographic range. The research assessed the genetic impact of intense hunting in the late 1800s and early 1900s, as well as current genetic trends, revealing decreased genome-wide heterozygosity over time and uncovering unique mitochondrial haplotypes and nuclear genotypes absent in contemporary populations.
