UIFS4 Database of bilateral inwards FDI stocks 2001-2022

A new database that contains bilateral inward FDI (foreign direct investment) stocks for 230 jurisdictions over the period 2001-2022. It contains 557 thousands numerically filled datacells. It is based only on reported data (no estimation, no imputation) using the full information of data by IMF, OECD, ASEAN, UNCTAD and Eurostat. The importance of this unique dataset derives from its coverage and its time consistency. The latter is important, because in 2008 (great financial crisis) the IMF and OECD decided to change the definition of FDI, becoming effective after 2010. It meant that pre-2010 and post-2010 FDI data are no longer compatible. Details and backgrounds are analysed in my paper "Repairing a historical mistake in bilateral FDI statistics: a new dataset covering 2001-2022" (Review of International Economics, 2025; https://doi.org/10.1111/roie.70004). This paper also gives the full analytic framework behind the dataset plus a quantification of the effects of the FDI definition change.
