Phytophthora: an underestimated threat to agriculture, forestry and natural ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa

This dataset contains a compilation of Phytophthora species found in sub-Saharan Africa. The primary source of data for Phytophthora species recorded in this region was the USDA Fungus-Host Database (Farr and Rossman 2021). Supplementary data, including published lists and literature, were also consulted to enhance and refine the dataset. Additionally, records of Phytophthora strains from sub-Saharan African countries were included from the CBS collection at the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute (https://wi.knaw.nl/), the Herb IMI database maintained by Kew Royal Botanical Gardens (http://www.herbimi.info/herbimi/home.htm), and the World Phytophthora Collection (WPC) housed at the University of California, Riverside (https://microplantpath.ucr.edu/world-phytophthora-collection-university-california-riverside). Whenever possible, the dataset utilized the updated taxonomic names for species that have undergone taxonomic revision. It is important to note that the dataset does not differentiate between records supported by molecular data and those based solely on morphological data.
