The study aims at enriching bacteria able to degrade certain nitrogen-containing compounds for use as sole nitrogen source. The compounds in question have not been shown before to serve as sufficient N-sources and the enrichment process identified several bacteria able to degrade these compounds. Genome sequencing of these strains was carried out in order to enable the study of the degradation/utilization pathways in these bacteria.
