Memory, Exile, and Nostalgia in Iraqi Graphic Narratives: A Study of Poppies of Iraq and The Flavors of Iraq

This article investigates how Iraqi graphic memoirs articulate memory, exile, and nostalgia through visual and narrative form, focusing on Brigitte Findakly and Lewis Trondheim’s Poppies of Iraq (2017) and Feurat Alani and Léonard Cohen’s The Flavors of Iraq (2024). Through close readings of linework, color palettes, panel layouts, and textual strategies, the study reveals two distinct but complementary modes of nostalgia. In Poppies of Iraq, watercolor‑washed vignettes, sparse gestural strokes, and the recurring motif of crimson poppies enact both restorative and reflective nostalgia, reconstructing a childhood under Saddam Hussein’s regime while inviting readers to linger in the silences between memories. In contrast, The Flavors of Iraq assembles “tweet‑sized” sensory snapshots, each dated and illustrated in saturated hues, to perform reflective nostalgia as postmemory, where taste, aroma, and texture become conduits for personal and political remembrance. By juxtaposing these formal strategies, the article demonstrates comics’ unique capacity to make absence visible, to map the affective contours of displacement, and to transform individual recollections into collective memory. Finally, it considers how multimedia adaptations, such as the novel’s video episodes, extend the graphic form’s mnemonic reach, offering new avenues for diasporic storytelling and communal identity formation.
