Physiology of Arthropods (Collembola) at Cape Hallett

Environmental physiology of three species of springtails (Hexapoda: Collembola): (1) Isotoma klovstadi (Isotomidae), (2) Cryptopygus cisantarcticus (Isotomidae) and (3) Friesia grisea (Neanuridae). We measured supercooling points, diurnal shifts in supercooling points, cold tolerance, critical thermal minima and maxima, tolerance to desiccation and haemolymph osmolality for all three species, as well as total proteins, responses to and recovery from desiccation, osmoregulatory ability, heat and cold shock responses and fine scale spatial variation in physiology of Isotoma klovstadi.
