Dataset of Global Climate- and Planetary-Health Competency Frameworks in Medical Education

This dataset provides a comprehensive overview of competency frameworks related to climate and planetary health in undergraduate and graduate medical education. Developed as part of the scoping review titled "Medical Education Competency Frameworks for Climate and Planetary Health: A Scoping Review," the dataset includes detailed information on 12 consensus-level competency frameworks developed by medical organizations, academic consortia, and national regulatory bodies between 2010 and 2024. These frameworks were identified through systematic searches of peer-reviewed and gray literature sources, and reflect emerging global efforts to integrate climate health competencies into physician training.Each framework was coded for its source organization, country of origin, overlap with existing curricular requirements, and inclusion of key climate-health domains. The data capture the presence or absence of competencies across thematic areas such as foundational medical knowledge, climate-informed clinical skills, communication, professionalism, advocacy, systems-based practice, sustainability, health equity, and Indigenous or nature-based knowledge. Frameworks were drawn from diverse sources including the General Medical Council (UK), Australian Medical Council, Planetary Health Report Card, the Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education, and others. Data synthesis included tabulation of framework characteristics (Table 1), competency domains (Table 2), and a comparative matrix of competencies in medical versus public health institutions (Table 3), with further elaboration in Appendix A.1The dataset supports further research in curriculum development, comparative education studies, and competency-based assessment in climate and planetary health. It is well-suited for researchers, educators, policymakers, and accrediting bodies seeking to benchmark existing efforts, identify gaps in current frameworks, or build consensus on global educational standards in climate-health education. The dataset is publicly reusable under academic attribution guidelines and may inform future development of competency blueprints, faculty development modules, and institutional readiness assessments.
