Protest Survey at a Demonstration against Stuttgart 21

Since 2003, researchers associated with the Institute for the Study of Protest and Social Movements (Institut für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung, ipb, http://protestinstitut.eu) have conducted surveys at demonstrations. This study is part of this ongoing series. The aim of the study is to gain insights into the composition and attitudes of participants at a rally against the infrastructure project “Stuttgart 21”. The project aimed at integrating the central railway station in Stuttgart into a high-speed rail system, replacing the terminal station by an underground station. The focus of the survey is particularly on socio-demographic characteristics, political attitudes and perceptions of the infrastructure project held by the respondents encountered at the demonstration. The demonstrations under study took place on October 18th, 2010 in Stuttgart. Attendance was estimated between 10,000 (according to the police) and 22,000 (according to the organizers) The questionnaire consisted of 31 questions. It was available in German only. In order to allow for comparison with earlier protest surveys, the questionnaire relied on questions used in earlier protest surveys. The questionnaire consists of the following sets of questions: • Motivation: open question about the motivation to take part in the demonstration • Protest activity • Protest mobilization: knowledge about the demonstration, mobilization network • Issue related questions: evaluation of the project and actors in the conflict • Political attitudes: evaluation of democracy, perception of democracy (open question), trust in institutions, self-placement on the political spectrum, voting tendency • Sociodemographic questions: gender, year of birth, nationality, education, occupation Seit 2003 führen Forscher des Instituts für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung (Institut für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung, ipb, http://protestinstitut.eu) Umfragen bei Demonstrationen durch. Diese Studie ist Teil dieser fortlaufenden Reihe. Ziel der Studie ist es, Einblicke in die Zusammensetzung und die Einstellungen der Teilnehmer einer Kundgebung gegen das Infrastrukturprojekt „Stuttgart 21”. Das Projekt zielte darauf ab, den Stuttgarter Hauptbahnhof in ein Hochgeschwindigkeitsbahnsystem zu integrieren und den Kopfbahnhof durch einen unterirdischen Bahnhof zu ersetzen. Der Schwerpunkt der Umfrage liegt insbesondere auf soziodemografischen Merkmalen, politischen Einstellungen und Wahrnehmungen des Infrastrukturprojekts durch die Befragten, die bei der Demonstration angetroffen wurden. Die untersuchten Demonstrationen fanden am 18. Oktober 2010 in Stuttgart statt. Die Teilnehmerzahl wurde auf 10.000 (laut Polizei) bis 22.000 (laut Veranstaltern) geschätzt. Der Fragebogen umfasste 31 Fragen. Er war ausschließlich in deutscher Sprache verfügbar. Um einen Vergleich mit früheren Protestumfragen zu ermöglichen, stützte sich der Fragebogen auf Fragen, die bereits in früheren Protestumfragen verwendet wurden. Der Fragebogen besteht aus folgenden Fragekomplexen: • Motivation: offene Frage zur Motivation, an der Demonstration teilzunehmen • Protestaktivität • Protestmobilisierung: Wissen über die Demonstration, Mobilisierungsnetzwerk • Themenbezogene Fragen: Bewertung des Projekts und der Konfliktakteure • Politische Einstellungen: Bewertung der Demokratie, Wahrnehmung der Demokratie (offene Frage), Vertrauen in Institutionen, Selbsteinstufung auf dem politischen Spektrum, Wahlverhalten • Soziodemografische Fragen: Geschlecht, Geburtsjahr, Staatsangehörigkeit, Bildung, Beruf
