Data for measuring the extent and connectivity of Canada's protected area network to inform conservation planning

These data and scripts were used to develop the analyses supporting a manuscript (in review) describing an integrated approach to operationalize area-based conservation inclusive of protection, connectivity, and representation. Data for a map of human modification for Canada (2022, 90 m resolution), as well as resistance surfaces, and code used to calculate indicators of structural connectivity, are provided. List of datasets: "HM_CA_2022_90" -- human modification (overall, cumulative) for Canada representing ~2022 conditions, 90 m resolution. Values range from 0.0 (no modification) to 1.0 (full human modification). "d4pas_CPCAD_y<year>_d100000_a<alpha>_w01_r300.tif" -- GeoTIFF files at 300 m resolution representing cost-distance calculated from the edge of protected areas (PAs, from the Canadian Protected and Conserved Database) for <years> = 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020, 2024), and <alpha> = 0.5, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25, and 1.5. Cost-distance was calculated using resistance surface (R), human modification values (H), alpha (a) representing a sensitivity parameter, and Dmax =100,000, where R = Dmax^(H^a). nef_ca_ter_ecozone_v2_2_MP.shp - shapefile of Canadian ecozones, dissolved to generate a single polygon per ecozone. List of code: "Calculate ProNet by Canadian ecozones 20260112 no intersection needed.R" - Code used to calculate ProNet connectivity metric in R code.
