Exposure of beef cattle to high grain diets is often associated with the occurance of subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA), altered rumen ecosystem and subsequent shifts in rumen microbial profile; thereby compromising animal performance and production. Direct fed microbial (DFM) supplementation of high-grain diets with lactic acid utilizing bacteria (i.e. Propionibacterium acidipropionici P169) has been practiced to alleviate the severity of SARA. However, the direct or indirect role that P169 supplementation can play in modulating rumen microbiota is poorly understood. To that end, a study was conducted to investigate the effects of P169 DFM supplementation on the global patterns of rumen microbiota.
