Supplementary material for the article "The production of long-distance wh-questions in Italian: Medial questions and resumptives"

This data set includes the supplementary material for the article "The production of long-distance wh-questions in Italian: Medial questions and resumptives". Abstract: When forming biclausal questions, several studies show that children produce medial wh-questions (e.g. 'Who do you think who Grover wants to hug?', cf. Thornton 1990) and resumptive elements (e.g. 'Who do you think he was really good at it?', cf. Liter et al. 2022). However, work in this area (i) has focused on only a handful of languages and (ii) often employed intrusive prompts to elicit a target response. We conduct the first production study on biclausal questions in Italian, attempting to refine some methodological choices which may have had an impact on the results in previous studies. We find that children even without a prompt produce correct biclausal questions about half the time with a 19.1% rate of medial wh-questions. We further observe the unprecedented use of indefinite pronouns as resumptives and the absence of an object-advantage, often reported for other languages.
