De novo sequencing and characterization of transcriptome in the american cockroach Periplaneta americana. Periplaneta americana

Periplaneta americana is widely distributed throughout the temperate, subtropical and tropical regions and recognized as a domestic pest, a vector of human disease, and important model species for neuroethology. In this study we carried out de novo transcriptome sequencing for the american cockroach Periplaneta americana. We extracted RNA separately from the six categories of individuals, namely, (i) 12 egg cases, (ii) 20 young instar larvae (1-3 instars), (iii) one female old-instar larvae having developed wing pads, (iv) one male old-instar larvae having developed wing pads, (v) one adult female, (vi) one adult male. cDNA libraries generated from the purified RNA were sequenced using a Hiseq2000 platform with 101-bp paired-end reading. De novo transcriptome assemly was then performed. Contigs generated by the assembly were annotated.
