Taxonomy and inventories provide secure data for the future through the synergy between classical taxonomy and molecular barcoding of individual organisms. A "barcode" is a sequence of cytochrome oxydase I (in vertebrates and most of the animals) associated to an individual organism. Sequences are finally deposited in banks like BOLD. For example, for fishes of Antarctica see the FISHBOL website. The richest are the data banks, the more reliable will be future assignment of an individual to a species.
