Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), NHERI 2023: Measuring Settlement with Laser Lines after Soil Liquefaction

This research expands the development of a new image analysis method used for measuring settlement in soil models to work for saturated soils. Data in this project can be used in a lab to determine the settlement of soil in a model, and can be adapted by researchers to track the settlement of soil around a structure. This project is unique in that it offers an open source non-contact-based method for measuring settlement in a model. Other methods require either expensive software, or limit the amount of points that can be tracked. The intended audience is researchers conducting geotechnical, earthquake, and specifically liquefaction related research interested in new methods of measuring displacement in soil models.
