Measurement of dielectric loss factor and capacity on high voltage glass and silicon rubber insulating material

A series of experiments were performed to measure the capacitance and dielectric loss factor of glass insulators and polymer surge arresters at different relative humidity levels from 40% to 90%. The surfaces of the samples were subjected to four different levels of contamination. A conductive copper tape was attached to the surface of the glass insulator, which served as the measuring electrode.
HIOKI LCR meter IM3533-1 was used to measure capacitance and dielectric loss factor. The dielectric loss factor and capacity, as measured across a frequency range from 1 Hz to 200 kHz, demonstrate a correlation with contamination and the humidity levels.
