Sentinel-2 derived snow melt-out date (SMOD) maps of six mountain areas in the eastern Balkan peninsula

This dataset includes high resolution (20 m) maps of the estimated Snow melt-out date (SMOD), the day of year when seasonal snow disappears, based on Sentinel-2 data from 2017 to 2025. One map, representing the “average” SMOD in the analyzed period is provided for each of six study areas, including: (1) “StaraPlaninaWest” – the western part of Stara planina Mountains at the border of Bulgaria and Serbia; (2) “StaraPlaninaCentral” – the central part of Stara planina Mountains in Bulgaria; (3) “OsogovskaPlanina” – the Osogovska Planina Mountains at the border of Bulgaria and North Macedonia; (4) “Vitosha” – the Vitosha Mountains in Bulgaria; (5) “PirinSlavyankaOrvilos” – the Pirin Mountains in Bulgaria and the Slavyanka/Orvilos mountains on the border of Bulgaria and Greece; and (6) “Rila” – the Rila Mountains in Bulgaria. The maps represent the areas above 1600 m a.s.l. which are not covered by forest and Pinus mugo Turra communities. Data are provided as GeoTIFF files in UTM projection with valid values between 50 and 365, representing the snowmelt Day of Year (DOY). Forest, water bodies, and areas below 1600 m a.s.l. are masked.
