By domesticating residual sludge from a wastewater treatment plant with two culture conditions (anoxic and anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic), the microorganisms were made to function as endogenous and exogenous partial denitrification (reduced NO3- to NO2-). Differences in the community structure of the two functional microorganisms were revealed by high-throughput sequencing.
