FFRDC Research and Development Survey (FFRDC R&D) Public Use Data Files

The FFRDC Research and Development Survey is the primary source of information on research and development (R&amp;D) expenditures that are separately accounted for at federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) in the United States. Conducted annually for university-administered FFRDCs since FY 1953 and all FFRDCs since FY 2001, the survey collects information on R&amp;D expenditures by source of funds and types of research and expenses. The survey is an annual census of the full population of FFRDCs.<br><br>Institution-level microdata from the FFRDC Research &amp; Development Survey are provided in the zip files. The files include publicly releasable data for each survey year from FY 1979 through FY 2024. Prior to 2001 only FFRDCs administered by academic institutions were included in the survey.<br>The file organization makes each year's institution data available in a single record. The microdata are organized by year and are available in Excel and SAS. A guide is available in pdf format in the top level folder.<br>Correction(s) Date Feb 13, 2018: In the FY 2015 public use file, the location of several FFRDCs was listed incorrectly. The affected FFRDCs were National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Science and Technology Policy Institute, SLAC National Accelerator Lab, Aerospace FFRDC, and National Solar Observatory. Their locations have been corrected in the public use file. The FY 2015 data tables were unaffected.
