"Clustering optimization is one of the key techniques to improve the energy efficiency of Wireless Sensor Networks. Increasing meta-heuristic algorithms are introduced for dealing with the clustering optimization problem which is NP-hard. However, most meta-heuristics are inefficient to optimize this problem. This paper proposes a new energy efficient clustering algorithm (WSA-IC based Clustering, WSA-ICC) for Wireless Sensor Networks. First of all, a new energy-efficient clustering optimization objective function is designed, which considers the energy consumption of cluster heads as well as that of sensor nodes. Secondly, WSA-ICC algorithm improves individual coding, distance calculation between individuals and individual movement rules, for successfully solving the clustering optimization problem. And a neighborhood search strategy is designed. Then, the performance of WSA-ICC algorithm is verified by a set of simulation examples. Finally, a real protocol is implemented and used in practical experiments to demonstrate the practicality of WSA-ICC algorithm."
