Individuals affiliated with the Democratic Party are much more likely to think that abortion should be legal at six weeks gestation. 71 percent of Democrats felt that abortion should be legal at this stage to some degree. Conversely, the largest proportion of individuals affiliated with the Republican Party (43 percent) felt that abortion should be illegal to some degree at six weeks. However, 24 percent of Republicans also indicated that the legality of the abortion should depend on the circumstances. At six weeks gestation there is typically cardiac activity, and a fetal heartbeat can be detected. This is usually before many women know they are pregnant.
