MicroRNAs and cardiometabolic traits

An emerging health challenge for low- and middle-income countries is the pandemic of cardio-metabolic diseases with 80% of the cases living in these countries. Our recent works, among others, suggest that the mixed-ancestry South Africans have been particularly affected by cardiometabolic diseases than other ethnic groups in South Africa for reasons that are unclear. Therefore, we aimed to detect novel microRNAs underlying the high risk of hypertension and other cardiometabolic traits in a South African population.
