Metatake Filming Locations Dataset

17,341 filming and setting locations across 1,917 films and 130 countries, each with WGS-84 coordinates (100% geocoded). What makes it unusual: it distinguishes where a film was physically shot (the "filmed" layer) from where it is set in the story (the "setting" layer), and records each place's role in the film. This shot-vs-set layer is not, to our knowledge, available as open data elsewhere. Curated and published by Metatake (https://metatake.net), an independent film-criticism platform. Locations are extracted per film from public reference sources and a close-reading pass, then geocoded and reconciled. This is curated interpretive data, not a comprehensive shooting-permit registry — coverage skews to films Metatake has read closely.
