The project aims to assess how different aspects of the Arab Spring, such as academic funding, migration discourse, and general scholarly attention, have evolved over time.

The analysis includes comparative performance assessments, data visualizations, and supplementary materials supporting the research findings.

Repository Code Structure

1. Main Figures/

This directory contains the key visual representations of the research findings. Figures are categorized based on their thematic focus:

Attention/ – Figures related to the general scholarly attention given to the Arab Spring. The post-processing step is also mentioned here.

Funding/ – Figures analyzing research funding trends.

Migration/ – Figures illustrating migration-related research discussions.

2. Methods/

This directory contains methodological approaches and scripts used for analysis:

Performance comparison/ – Evaluation of different models, including LLM performance (e.g., ChatGPT analysis) and Transformers on the annotated datasets.

Validation sample creation/ – Scripts used to generate validation samples for the annotation.

3. Supplementary Materials/

This directory contains additional research analyses, supplementary data, and extended discussions:

Attention/ – Extended analysis of scholarly attention: GDP, topics, and affiliations of Arab-Spring-related research.

Funding/ – Examining research funding in relation to economic indicators.

Migration/ – Additional insights into migration-related academic discussions: relation to GDP, Religion.

More analysis/ – Other relevant research findings not included in the main figures: number of publications.

Repository Data Structure

Study Datasets

Attention/ – Dataset related to the general scholarly attention given to the Arab Spring. Columns are: country of affiliation, mentioned country, year, and subject area

Scholarly output/ – Dataset related to the number of publications per discipline per country per year

Funding/ – Dataset related to the general funding attention given to the Arab Spring. Columns are: country of affiliation, mentioned country, year, and subject area

Arab Spring related research/ – Dataset with year, title abstract and EID with the subject areas and affiliations analyzed by Scopus

Annotated abstracts/ – 1000 abstracts annotated by 2 people, identifying the countries inside

Complementary Datasets

Migration/ – Dataset related to the scholarly migration

Religion/ – Dataset related to the religion of each country
