Amplicon sequencing-based survey of symbiont transmission in three cicada species. Cicadas and their symbiont Candidatus Hodgkinia cicadicola

In many clades of cicadas (Insecta: Hemiptera: Cicadidae), their bacterial nutritional endosymbiont Candidatus Hodgkinia cicadicola has evolved into complexes of genetically and cytologically distinct, interdependent lineages. We studied the intergenerational transmission of these lineages in three cicada species. We did this by sequencing the Hodgkinia protein-coding gene amplicons for eggs produced by different females. The current BioProject groups BioSamples that correspond to batches of eggs produced by different females.
