The present series consists of a single volume, in which are recorded copies of the outgoing correspondence of the Cassilis Public School Board (or Committee), along with brief minutes of the Committee’s meetings. One or more pages are missing at the beginning of the volume; several pages remain blank at the end.The first complete item of correspondence to survive is dated the 23rd August, 1875, and records the Board’s ‘pleasure and approval’ of the decision of the Council of Education to open a Public School at Cassilis in succession to the Church of England School previously operating there. The volume continues to record the Board’s efforts to procure a new school-house (opened the 15th of November, 1876), further works at the school until 1880, and such matters as arrangements for use of the school-house for special purposes, the granting of permission to close the school on particular or significant days, and the Board’s response to the sudden illness and death of the teacher, Mr Buchanan, in December 1878.
