Mancos Black-on-white, bowl, Accession AZRU-00001 Catalog #993. Morris FS 5067. CULTURALLY SENSITIVE: NAGPRA ARTIFACT; ACCESS RESTRICTED. Analyzed by Lori Reed 2011. Temper is granular igneous rock suggesting manufacture at Aztec Ruins. Bowl is 98% complete. Measurements: 22.7 cm diameter, 10.1 cm height. Image AZRU1-993 A: view showing interior painted design. Image AZRU1-993 D: exterior view showing shape of bowl and drill holes for repair. Recovered from Earl Morris excavation of southeast refuse mound, Burial 104, Aztec West Ruin. Earl Morris’ description of the southeast refuse mount at the time of excavation is as follows. “….[Having] a depth of about 7 feet and composed of sweepings, ashes, animal bones, and sherds.. but generally lacking in architectural debris. There were occasional rock-walled firepits. Sherds in the mound were all of the earlier Chaco complex …burials are extremely rare in all of the refuse heaps.” (Morris 1928:414).
