Dutch-African Trade Database (1847-1918)

In the framework of the VICI funded project Exploiting the Empire of Others: Dutch Investment in Foreign Colonial Resources, 1570-1800 at Leiden University, this dataset has assembled data on trade between The Netherlands and West and East Africa between 1847 and 1918. In January 2026, this dataset has been updated to include data form Southern Africa as well, collected within the framework of Gerda Henkel Foundation project 14/F/25, Empire and Enterprise Revisited: Dutch Entrepreneurs in Southern and Southeast Africa (1870s-1910s). This mainly concerns data collected for Dutch trade with the Cape of Good Hope for 1847 to 1914, in line with the timeframe of the other data already collected.
