Internet of Things-Based Wireless Communication System for Smart Ocean Monitoring Systems

The IoT technology has evolved at such a high pace, and we are now able to make smart monitoring systems in inaccessible areas like in the ocean using the same connected devices. Based on the requirements of environmental protection, the marine ecosystems require continuous monitoring in regard to climate analysis, predictions of disasters, and management of the marine resources. The traditional ocean monitoring techniquesa do actually imply the deployment of ships and satellites, but they definitely do not match with the possibilities of tracking long distances and delivering the information within a limited amount of time. Based on these concerns, the paper shall suggest an Internet of Things wireless system with regards to smart ocean monitoring. Based on the proposed system, sensors underwater, wireless communication, edge computation, and cloud platforms are integrated as far as monitoring the marine environment in real-time is concerned. It is just a system design that consists of the different layers—sensor layer, communication layer, edge processing layer, and cloud intelligence layer—that are put in a stacking format on top of each other. Based on the requirements of the research, mathematical models are developed on sensor data collection, underwater signal movement, the amount of energy consumed by the network, communication delay, and reliability of the network. In addition, it is proposed that an intelligent ocean data collection algorithm can be capable of making the data transmission more efficient and reducing the communication overhead as such. Besides, the results of the simulation are that the proposed architecture improves additional network throughput, ratio of packet delivery, and energy saving as compared to the conventional underwater monitoring systems themselves. Basically, this platform offers the same scalable and reliable configuration that next-generation smart ocean monitoring applications need.
