Abdominal colour patterns of the sand diving spider Ammoxenus amphalodes (Araneae: Gnaphosidae) from South Africa

The two types of abdominal patterns found in Ammoxenus species are discussed, with emphasis on A. amphalodes Dippenaar & Meyer, 1980. With images of live specimens, the two patterns are shown. Within the genus, there is large interspecific similarity, but intraspecific variability regarding the abdominal colour pattern. Due to these variations found species are sometimes wrongly identified.
