Lactobacillus delbreuckii sub sp. bulgaricus (NRRL-B-548) was evaluated for their ability to adhere to and reduce Salmonella colonization in primary chicken cecal epithelial cells, and survival in chicken macrophages. Additionally, their effect on Salmonella motility and virulence gene expression was evaluated.Initial co-culture experiments revealed that all the tested lactic acid bacteria completely inactivated Salmonella by 24 h of incubation. Additionally, pre-exposure of the CEC and HTC to these cultures significantly (P<0.05) reduced Salmonella invasion. Results of the study indicate that Lactobacillus delbreuckii sub sp. bulgaricus (NRRL-B-548) inhibited Salmonella motility, intestinal colonization, and dissemination. However, these observations warrant further in vivo evaluation of the select candidate strains for their potential application as probiotics to reduce Salmonella carriage in chickens.
