To provide survey and navigation support for the International Antarctic Glaciological Project (IAGP).
Details:
1) During the 1984 changeover period carry out survey work as required for the re-building programme at Casey station.
2) Summer Programme:
- Carry out a gravity survey on strain grids SGA, SGP, SGB, SGQ, SGR and SGD.
- Using helicopter mounted ice radar, extend the detailed radio-echo sounding of Vanderford Glacier from the 1982/1983 summer programme to cover the remainder of the glacier. Surface measurements of gravity and barometric elevation to be made along the major radar flight lines.
- Glacier movement survey to be made near Haupt Nunataks with measurements at markers at the beginning and end of the season.
- The location of several islands to be determined by DME equipment or JMR Doppler satellite equipment. At least one of Hatch Islands or Ivanhoe Head to be determined and a section of coastline on the northern part of Law Dome to be determined.
- Two different types of mechanical coring drills to be tested on the ice sheet inland from Casey.
3) 1984 Traverse Program
Re-survey of the 1978 and 1979 traverse line to about 74 degrees S latitude. A secondary objective is the continuation of the surveys on the Law Dome east of Casey.
