Lake Ice Extent 2021-present (raster 500 m), northern hemisphere, daily - version 1

On a daily basis classifies pixels in Northern Hemisphere freshwater bodies into 1) Ice, 2) Open water, and 3) Cloud. The class “Ice” includes various types of ice, also snow-covered ice. The data is updated in near real-time with the spatial resolution of 500 m and with has a temporal extent from April 2021 to present.

Lake ice is a good climate indicator and interesting parameter in hydrological modelling, weather prediction and, after integration over time, estimating dates for ice phenology events (ice break-up, ice-off).

Lake Ice Extent products classify ice for freshwater bodies, per cloud-free pixel, into (i) fully snow covered ice, (ii) partially snow covered ice/clear ice and (iii) open water.
