We collected four cryoconite samples from a single hole along a typical summer day (4.30 am, 7.30 am, 1.30 pm and 7.30 pm) on the Forni glacier (Italy) on July 2018 and we used shotgun metatransctriptomics sequencing to investigate the expression of the main metabolic functions along the day (Methodological details are reported in SM1). We focused on carbon and energy metabolisms by comparing the total coverage of marker gene transcripts for photosynthesis, use of inorganic and organic compounds as energy source, respiration and autotrophy/heterotrophy
