Photographic portrait of a half-tone print of mining millionaire Aluinza Hayward, ca.1890-1900. He is visible from the chest up and can be seen wearing a light-colored shirt, dark bow tie, vest, and jacket. He has a full head of gray hair and wears a full beard with mustache. He is turned, in silhouette, to his left. Photoprint reads: "Father of James A. Hayward of James A. Hayward and Co. banking partnership with John G. Downey. Succeeded by banking house of John G. Downey. John G. Downey was the first president to Farmers Merchants [...]". Hayward lived from 1822 to 1904.; Hayward was one of California's first gold-mining millionaires. A lawyer turned miner, he was one of the first at Sutter Creek to consolidate mines acquired from other miners. He became a banker and was one of California's great builders.
