To retrace the history of rose breeding in Europe during the nineteenth century and shed new light on genetic changes during this period, 16 rose cultivars were selected because they were considered as 'star varieties' based on extensive literature searches on historical catalogs of varieties and because they complete public resequencing data yet available. Rose cultivars were then classified in following rose groups: Ancient European, Ancient Asian, Early European x Asian hybrids, Hybrid Tea roses. Resequencing data was then subjected to population genetic analyses: population structure, kinship, analysis of global genetic erosion and detection of local genomic footprints of artificial selection.
