Diatom frustule-bound nitrogen isotope dataset from diatom cultures in the SNSF-funded NISOPROX project. Species: Species names of diatoms used in the batch cultures. Culture_ID: Unique identifier for each individual batch culture. Time: Timepoint at which a sample was taken in days relative to the start of the batch culture. Relative fluorescence: In vivo fluorescence measured in relative units. Medium pH: pH value of the medium. 15N-labeled nitrate addition: Boolean indicating whether 15N-labeled nitrate was added to the culture. Addition of TES buffer: Boolean indicating whether culture medium was buffered with TES. Silicate concentration: Medium silicate concentration in µM. Nitrate concentration: Medium nitrate concentration in µM. Fraction of nitrate remaining: The amount of nitrate in the medium relative to the amount of nitrate at the start of the batch culture. Nitrate d15N: Nitrate nitrogen isotope values in delta notation expressed as [‰ vs AIR]. Frustule-bound d15N: Diatom frustule-bound nitrogen isotope values in delta notation expressed as [‰ vs AIR]. These values are corrected for blank contribution introduced in the oxidation procedure through a mass balance calculation using measured sample δ15N, blank contribution and blank δ15N. POR blank contribution: Blank size relative to sample size. Blank size was obtained through measurements of nitrate concentration in procedural blank vials. POR blank d15N: Nitrogen isotopic values in delta notation expressed as [‰ vs AIR] of the blanks determined through comparisons of procedural amino acid standard samples with known δ15N values or processed blank samples. POR correction size: The size of the correction of isotopic values in delta notation expressed as [‰], based on measured sample δ15N, blank contribution and blank δ15N. I.e. measured sample δ15N vs corrected frustule-bound δ15N. POR blank method: Calculations of blank δ15N are done using the listed amino acids or blank injection. Frustule N content: Amount of N relative to biogenic silica expressed as [nmol N / mg bSi]. Biomass d15N: Biomass nitrogen isotope values in delta notation expressed as [‰ vs AIR]. Biomass d13C: Biomass carbon isotope values in delta notation expressed as [‰ vs VPDB]. Biomass N content: Biomass nitrogen content expressed as [g N / g biomass]. Biomass C content: Biomass carbon content expressed as [g C / g biomass].
