We evaluated the sequence diversity of several Alteromonas macleodii ribosomal RNA operons in a bacterial population from the same seawater sample (Adriatic 1000m deep sample fosmids). Our data highlight the combined effects of intra- and intergenomic heterogeneity that is observed in a single population and call into question the reliability of rRNA diversity estimates.
